High-Frequency Low-Noise Voltage-Controlled LC-Tank Oscillators Using a Tunable Inductor Technique

چکیده
This paper describes 3-GHz and 7-GHz tunableinductance LC-tank voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) implemented in 0.18-μm CMOS technology. Unlike the traditional tuning method by a varactor, a tunable inductor is employed in the VCO by using a transformer to compensate for the energy loss. The VCO facilitates the tuning frequency and low noise of the output signals, together with a variable inductor which satisfies both criteria. The 3-GHz VCO using a symmetry transformer provides the tuning range of 2.85 to 3.12 GHz at 1-V supply. The power consumption is 4.8 mW while the measured phase noise is −126 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset from a 2.85-GHz carrier. A small-area stacked transformer is employed in the 7-GHz VCO, which achieves a tuning range of 6.59 to 7.02 GHz and measured phase noise of −114 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset from a 6.59-GHz carrier while consuming 9 mW from a 1.2-V supply. key words: LC VCO, tunable inductor, high Q, transformer

To qualify the condition of a multi standard and a multi band transceiver, a quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), which has a wide and proper tuning range, is necessary, while providing high phase noise performance and consuming low current. In this paper, a dual band quadrature VCO in 0.18 μm CMOS process is proposed. To attain the dual band operation, a reconfigureurable LC tank is...
متن کاملA Phase Noise Reduction Technique in LC Cross-coupled Oscillators with Adjusting Transistors Operating Regions
In this paper, an intuitive analysis of a phase noise reduction technique is done, and then a modified structure is proposed to achieve higher phase noise reduction than the original one. This method reduces the impact of noise sources on the phase noise by decreasing closed-loop gain in zero-crossings points and moving this high closed-loop gain to the non-zero-crossings points. This reduction...

This paper presents a new concept of fine frequency tuning in a differential LC oscillator by injecting quadrature phase shifted current into the tank that can replace the use of a conventional varactor, eliminating all limitations associated with it, such as specific bias voltage requirement, limited Q-factor, technology/process uncertainties, model accuracy etc. Wide tuning range of 8-14 GHz ...
متن کاملA New Analog-based LO Harmonic Rejection Technique with Tunable Notch Frequency
An effective technique for mixer LO harmonic rejection in a SAW-less wideband receiver front-end is proposed. The proposed technique provides a tunable notch that can be placed at any frequency like mixer LO harmonics, to avoid the aliasing in baseband after mixing. An analog LC notch is used in a cascode transconductor, and it can reject one of the 3rd or 5th harmonics. T...
